Feature Player: Maisie Waldren

Maisie Waldren

When we choose a feature player, it is in many ways quite a moving experience. The journey British Dodgeball has been on in these early months has been something incredible and we are honoured and so proud to be working with you all to develop the sport for all it deserves. This journey however would not be possible without all of you.

This feature player has been chosen for the amazing input and drive they have in dodgeball on and off court. She plays as one of the strongest players in the UK and has seen many awards come to her and her team. Amongst disciplined and strategic play, her involvement and voice within the community around dodgeball is one that resonates with a belief in something big and positive for the sport.

It is an honour to celebrate a player as this and we hope you all enjoy the feature.

- Where did your journey into dodgeball begin? What got you playing?

I actually came across dodgeball accidentally. My housemates at university needed to try out a new sport for their course, which I was dragged along to. I haven’t looked back since!

- What is it about the sport that you love most?

It is definitely the people and the inclusivity of the sport. It’s so easy to get in to and overall, a lot of fun! I am always aiming to flourish and achieve new things at each competition, whilst setting myself goals whether it be tactically or for fitness purposes. I wouldn’t have labelled myself as a competitive individual, but it has certainly brought out a secret streak in me.
The dodgeball community also throw a damn good social when we get together!

- In any sport, which sportsperson do you find most inspiring and why?

Funnily enough, I’m not a huge sports fanatic. Although, I am a big fan of Anthony Joshua, he’s an absolute beast. Started from the bottom and worked his way to the top, whilst being an honourable and humble guy. He’s also nice to look at if you ask me...

- What is it like being part of such a high level and successful club?

There are highs and lows playing at such a high level. The pressure is always on to deliver, which can be difficult at times; on the other hand my team are all naturals at the sport, with years of experience between us.
I honestly don’t know where I would be without my team. My coaches and the players have supported me so much, constantly taking their time to help me achieve my objectives and push me in the right direction. Initially, I didn’t believe that I would even play at the same standard as the girls in my squad, they are outstanding. However, the ladies made me feel equal from the off set, which enabled me to get stuck in. I still have a lot more to give, and I know they still have my back.

- If you had a dodgeball superpower, what would it be?

Probably invisibility, I could sneak up on players and get a cheeky toe shot!

- What are your ambitions within the sport?

My personal ambitions would be to move up the ladder, play internationally and continue to get fitter with a faster throw. I don’t think I will stop until I am there, with my Beagles by my side, but watch this space.
For the sport itself, I focus on spreading the word of dodgeball and encouraging people to get involved. We have a few new players this year and hopefully more to come!

- What is your greatest achievement in dodgeball?

Winning Nationals and DPL with Bedford Eagles. That’s a feeling you can’t shake off!

- What would be your dodgeball theme tune?

This is a tough one. It would probably have to be something tremendously cheesy like ‘Shake it off’... get smacked in the face, it’s all good, just got to shake it off I guess!

- What is your best memory in dodgeball.

There are many memories made in dodgeball, each tournament a different one. I think one of the best was when I played at Bedford Bulls in the second team, we were at South Champs I believe and came third, winning our first ever medal. Not only that, we were also given a position in nationals. That was a great day!
