Referee Development Strategy Announced
British Dodgeball’s Referee Manager has written an update for members, outlining the next steps in our Referee Development Strategy.
In the last 2 years, we have redeveloped the referee pathway from scratch, defining Refereeing Standards to highlight what outstanding officiating looks like; creating a detailed Refereeing Manual to better define standard operation procedure (SOP’s) and the role of various types of referee; developed online training provision and a new 1:1 shadowing session where learners get the opportunity observe experienced referees and to referee live matches as part of their training; implemented referee leads as a mandatory requirement for clubs, who receive rules & training updates and are responsible for cascading training to their clubs; and more.
This update outlines actions we’ll take to continue to develop refereeing across the UK. Some key actions include:
- Raising the rate of payment from £10/hr to £12/hr for British Dodgeball events. This is a reflection of the hard work that referees perform, and helps to make officiating more attractive to new & existing referees. It also puts us ahead of some more established sports in terms of payment rates.
- Improve the support which allocated referees provide to main referees by raising expectations of the assistant referees and putting more non-verbal signals in place which they will be expected to use.
- Highlight the importance of completing Referee Feedback Forms – our main mechanism for collecting feedback about the performance of our referees.
