Northern Ireland Dodgeball Season Preview: Belfast Tornadoes Ready to Build on Debut Season

Northern Irish Dodgeball returns this weekend with the first Regional Open taking place on the 24th in Belfast, before the National and Mixed Leagues return in the New Year. With a new league structure in the Mens Leagues set to bring fresh challenges and opportunities, teams across Northern Ireland will be looking to make their make as the new season gets underway.

For Belfast Tornadoes, the new season is a opportunity to build on their first season of competitive dodgeball. Having started out last season as a new club with two developing teams in the N.I. Mens league, they now enter their second season with greater experience and ambitions to challenge some of Northern Ireland’s established teams.

Refecting On Season One

Belfast Tornadoes entered competitive dodgeball last season with two relatively inexperienced squads, each containing around eight or nine players and just one experienced player. Rather than focusing solely on results, the priority was to gain valuable court time, develop their skills and learn what it takes to compete in Northern Ireland.

Reflecting on their debut campaign, the club said:

“We had a good first season, especially considering both teams were new to competitive dodgeball. With around eight or nine players in each squad and only one experienced player in each, the main focus was on getting as much game time as possible, gaining experience and learning from our mistakes.

One of the biggest challenges was adapting to different playing styles and tactics. The league format gave us a great opportunity to play against a range of teams and learn how to approach different match-ups. Our training was focused on key skills and preparing for specific opponents, which helped us improve our confidence, communication and tactical awareness.”

Building a club from the ground up

While results on court are important, Belfast Tornadoes’ ambitions extend beyond league positions. The club was established to give more people across Northern Ireland the opportunity to discover dodgeball, develop their abilities and progress towards competitive play. With many existing clubs drawing players from Queen’s University, Tornadoes wanted to create another route into the sport for beginners looking to get involved.

The club explained:

“Belfast Tornadoes was set up to give more people the chance to get involved in dodgeball in Northern Ireland. With many existing clubs drawing from Queen’s University, we wanted to create a club where beginners could get started, develop their skills and work towards playing competitively.

We started with just six players a few years ago and have grown to around 20, without actively focusing on recruitment. We’ve recently moved to a larger hall to accommodate growth and had two teams competing last season, with both returning this year. It’s great to see how much the club has grown over that time.”

Season two: Targeting promotion and continued progress

With the Mens league in Northern Ireland splitting into Super League and League 1, Belfast Tornadoes have found themselves in League 1, where they have a target of targeting points of the established teams and push for a chance at promotion.

“In the league, we want to take more points from established teams and turn some of those close matches from last season into better results. With our place in League 1, we’ve got a real opportunity to push for promotion, and that’s something we’re keen to aim for. We’ve got a better idea of what to expect this time around, and we’re looking forward to seeing how much progress we can make.”

Alongside their competitive goals, Tornadoes remain focused on expanding their membership, welcoming more beginners and establishing women’s and mixed teams. For the club, success will mean more than simply climbing the league table; it will also mean continuing to build a strong, inclusive community around the sport.

The Northern Ireland Season Starts
